Hollywood Promoters – Making Popularity a Business

Hollywood promoters are a hilarious example of how you can turn anything you want into a business.  Many promoters in Hollywood didn’t start out with a childhood dream of being a promoter.  Most are college educated with degrees in everything from business to engineering.  They end up falling into this career naturally because they are popular.

This is what happens.  If you bring many people of a certain quality to the club on a regular basis people notice.  And in time the ‘leader’ of groups will be approached by people such as other promoters or club managers.  The leader of the group suddenly is offered rewards and money for what he already does naturally, essentially being popular.  The more people that follow the promoter, the better they do.  The more people that listen to where is the coolest spot that night, the better the promoter does.

Each and every promoter in Hollywood has a certain style crowd.  Birds of a feather flock together.  So basically, people of similar types follow that promoter.  This ensures nightclubs specific crowds the night the promoter is working.  And all the promoter has to do is be as popular as possible.  Make as many friends as possible.  Network, party, and get to know people as much as possible.  Doesn’t sound like a bad job, does it?

Using Hollywood promoters is how a Hollywood nightclub ensures a good time.  If crowds clash too much, nobody has a good time and what happens is one crowd naturally leaves… trickling out one by one through the exit while the other crowd stays.  Crowd clash is a disaster.  The crowd is the natural following of the Hollywood promoters, and this is why they are critical.  Clubs can choose specific promoters to prevent crowd clash and ensure specific crowds and scene.

If little boys knew that a career could be to throw parties, make as many friends (and especially girl friends!) as possible, to have free VIP treatment bottle service every night, and to make good money from it, many more little boys would grow up dreaming of becoming a nightclub promoter.  Unfortunately for little kids, nobody teaches anyone about this niche career.

Why Bottle Service in Los Angeles is Not For Tourists

Here is a little insight into why bottle service in Los Angeles is not for tourists only.  First of all, many people in Los Angeles like to party right.  As natives, or scenesters, it is an insult to wait in line or to pay to get in.   It’s just a cultural thing.  It shouldn’t be an insult to have to wait like anyone else or pay like anyone else, but because LA is full of egotistical people and it is part of the culture, it is an insult for most.  Natives want the hookup, to party right, to not be treated like just another head.

The reason why bottle Service in Los Angeles is not for tourists only is because native Angelinos like to do things right or not do them at all.  They want and expect the VIP treatment.  Native scenesters don’t want to fight in lines or wait for drinks.  When you have a table you are partying ‘proper’, true VIP style no matter what club, night or scene.

Getting bottle service serves many purposes including the real estate of your own area in a crowded club, the privilege of being served instead of having to fight for each drink with other clubgoers at the bar, and freedom to invite people over.  It’s like literally hosting your own mini party within the club!

If you think about it now, what is possibly better than hosting your mini party within a hot club night?  Where you don’t have to be pushed, pulled or fight for dance space or drinks.  Where you get served and waited on hand and foot by the bottle service girl.  This is partying the right way.  And Angelinos like to do it right or not do it at all.  Now you see why bottle service in Los Angeles is not for tourists.  It’s for natives just as much as it is for tourists.

If anything, tourists probably are shocked at the prices if they aren’t familiar with table service in large cities (such as Vegas, NYC, or Miami).  Tourists (or people who just don’t know) if anything are the ones who can’t understand why someone would pay $400 for a bottle of liquor that you can buy at Ralphs for $40.  Just like people used to Hollywood nightlife would be confused at how clubs let anybody in, or charges girls cover.  Different scenes have different cultures, and rules and norms that apply.  Bottle service is an integral party of Hollywood nightlife for specific reasons, and it is for both natives and tourists alike.

Nightclubs and Ratios

People who work in nightclubs use the term ratios like it’s a word as common as valet.  But ratio to the average person doesn’t mean what it means to a person working in nightlife.  A ratio is simply the number of women to men.  You always want to aim for a higher ratio.

It’s much more to anyone’s advantage to have more girls with them than guys.  If it’s a group of all guys, it either takes longer to get in, costs more, or requires bottle service for entry.  This is fine, obviously guys like to have their boys nights out.  Ratios aren’t necessary, they just make getting in the door easier in every way.

This is because there consistently are always more guys who seem to go to bars and clubs than girls.  It’s very easy to have too many guys.  And too many guys, otherwise known as a sausage party or sword fight, are notoriously just not fun for the guys or the girls.  The ideal party for both guys and girls is to have more girls than guys if possible.  It’s just psychology.  So ratio is critical and the first thing judged in Hollywood nightlife in order to avoid a scene with too many guys and barely any girls.  This can kill a night because people just won’t be excited to come back.

Even whenever you pay ‘baller’ VIP status prices for bottle service, still the first question you are asked is what is your ratio.  This is because even when getting bottle service the ratio still matters!  You would assume that if paying VIP prices for premium service that it shouldn’t matter who you bring, hell you should be able to bring monkeys if you wanted for some bottle service prices.  But that is not the case, on any given night, any given club, ratio almost always affects even bottle service prices.

This shows how important ratio really is.  The ideal night for any nightclub is to have the problem of too many attractive girls.  This is the nightclub gold standard, because it is not easy to attain.  It happens, it’s just not a given that it will and nightclubs need to strive for it nightly.  So when somebody asks your ratio, now you can understand why it’s important.

Drais Hollywood

Drais Hollywood came on the scene in LA, dominated the most premium real estate in Hollywood within the new W hotel, and started with a bang trying to bring a little of their Vegas model to LA (sans the actual afterhours).  At first, for the first couple of months, it worked. Drais was hot.  Everyone wanted to book private events, corporate events, tables, see and be seen at Drais.  Once the glory time ended Drais was one of the few clubs in LA to fully execute a sustainable plan.  Supperclub LA is the only club to do a similar sustainable approach (just much better).

Drais has within the past few months hit what is close to rock bottom.  If you ever look at their crowd waiting in line outside on any given Friday or Saturday night the crowd is nothing but out of towners in all different sorts of dress clearly identifying their out of town status.  This is why Drais is the only club to put a distinct warning upon their events.  Their warning is “Dress Code:  DRESS TO IMPRESS!  All Patrons Subject to Doorman's Discretion. Upscale Fashion Forward Attire. No fitted caps or printed shirts with offensive or aggressive graphics (i.e. Ed Hardy, Affliction, etc.)”

Distinct dress code is good.  It’s almost impossible to know the true dress code of any given club on any given night ahead of time.  In some circles hipster attire for the non-hipster crowd is trending with plastic glasses and jean shorts. In other circles dressing in dresses and heels for any event is a no-brainer.  In other circles it’s urban couture with partial cut up and see through shirts and men with distinct labels.  The fact that they have to clearly warn people to now in 2012 wear Ed Hardy in LA (where Ed Hardy was over in early 2011) shows who the clubgoers are.

The only good night is Sunday because it is hosted by Dim Mak.  Drais Hollywood was the only club aside from Boulevard3 that attempted to refuse to use promoters.  The reason promoters in Hollywood exist is to curate specific crowds.  When a club doesn’t use promoters it’s highly likely they will not curate a specific crowd, particularly if they not a tiny sized club (such as Hyde lounge).
Even tiny sized Hyde lounge and Trousdale lounge uses Hollywood promoters.  They have very distinct crowds on very distinct nights.  Crowds are why people go out and why they rave the next day.  It’s all about the people inside, it’s not about the club décor or drinks they serve.  Drais went crashing because they refused to curate any specific crowd.  And now they are left with randoms upon randoms.

Enough to the point where now they actually make people wait outside in line (standard in Hollywood) to seem like a big deal.. and then charge now a $50 no wait vip access ticket.  So for $50 you can pay to not wait in line. Which is worth it, if Drais was worth it.  The irony is Drais is the same force that makes you wait.  So this is a new nightlife twist considering Drais Hollywood could very well decide to make people wait in line now not too look good to passerby traffic, but to make the crowd waiting in line pay an extra $50.  Nightlife just got funnier.

Hollywood Nightlife – Which came first, the hipsters or the celebrities?

Hollywood Nightlife – Which came first, the hipster or the celebrities?

Hollywood nightlife was always synonymous with celebrities.  Celebrities like to party in the clubs just like everyone else… it just so happens to be that LA is where you find a concentrated amount of celebrities.  Not to mention the fact that they have more flexible schedules and disposable income than most working people, so going out becomes natural.

The Hollywood nightlife model has molded around celebrities nightlife habits.  This is because people from out of town go out just to see celebs.  So when a club first opens it is the hot spot, because newer = hotter in LA.  And when it first opens it sets the stage for the rest of the club’s lifespan and style.

The question in Hollywood nightlife comes down to this: which came first, the hipsters or the celebrities?  Believe it or not, celebrities are not actually the trendsetters.  They have to answer to agents, managers, pr reps, contracts, etc all concerned with the celebrities image.  The celebrity image is their brand.  And their very livelihood.  So the image is a business, and there are many people involved.  They set trends to the public, but it’s actually trends put together by a team of masterminds behind it.

The real trendsetters (believe it or not) are the curiously despised hipsters.  Hipsters who won’t even ever admit that they are hipsters.  Admitting you are a hipster is rule #1 of violation and means you are not a hipster.  Don’t ever expect them to admit any of this, including even being a self-identified hipster.

The hipsters hit the clubs as early as the celebrities, and they actually set the trends (without trying of course).  The celebrities follow the hipsters.  Hipsters follow nobody.  People follow celebrities.  This is why nightclubs cater to celebs at first.  Not necessarily because they spend the most, but because people will come to that club after seeing it in magazines and TV long after the celeb no longer frequents that club.

So the answer to the question which came first, the hipsters or the celebrities? is actually the hipster.  Celebrities follow.  Models and bottles follow that and keep Hollywood nightlife alive and running.  This is the Hollywood nightlife model and the hipsters are actually the ones who set the trendsetting stage whether they like it or not. Nightlife Websites and their Biggest Problem

The reason so many nightlife websites start and just stop before they even get complete is because of one major hurdle.

Accuracy.  It's nearly impossible for one person or people starting a website to maintain accuracy in nightlife events.  It doesn't matter if that person has worked in or lived/breathed nightlife for the past 10 years. The reason is because their opinion will still always be skewed and this is why..
Nightclubs and nightlife operate off of what's hot. What is hot IS what is happening.  Everyone wants to know what's happening. AKA hot.

The problem is that different types of people find different scenes hot.  So one group of people, for example serious hip hop lovers, will find one club totally popping, while another group of people, lets say top 40/mainstream lovers, will find another club that same exact night totally raging.  2 clubs are 'the hottest'.  Wait. But then what really is the hottest that night?  See... this is where the problems start.

The way LAScenester.com has set out to solve this problem is to utilize all the different people working in nightlife, such as the promoters, to say what is going on.  LAScenester.com never actually says which 1 spot is hottest.  All that it does is give as much detailed information about nights as possible, such as music style, dress code, door factor, and how to get in including who to contact.

With this information people can figure out their scene.  House lovers can find their scene, dubsteppers can find their scene, hip hop lovers can find their scene... there is something for everyone.  It's the hottest scenes of each.  You can also tell what are going to be hot scenes based on the flyer, what is happening at the club that night and door factor.

Note that door factor alone doesn't mean anything because sometimes good indie underground scenes might have a non 'good luck' door... but that doesn't mean that there you won't find celebs, tastemakers or real 'scenesters', or just plain old great people and a cool scene.
